Quick Facts

Map of St. Bernard Parish

St. Bernard Parish is located in southeastern Louisiana. It is east and adjacent to the city of New Orleans.

The area of the parish is 4,606 km².

The largest city in the parish is Chalmette.

The Battle of New Orleans in the Revolutionary War took place January 8, 1815 in Chalmette.

The eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over the eastern portion of the parish on August 29, 2005.

The storm pushed a 25-foot surge into the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet which destroyed the levees and flooded almost the entire parish.

Most of the parish was submerged under anywhere from 5 to 12 feet of standing water.

Over 29,000 homes were completely destroyed.

98% of the parish was evacuated.

Murphy Oil’s Meraux refinery is located in St. Bernard Parish. An above ground storage tank was dislodged during Hurricane Katrina. The tank contained 65,000 barrels of mixed crude oil and released approximately 25,110 barrels, equal to 1,050,000 gallons. This oil impacted approximately 1700 homes in and around Chalmette.

According to the census of 2000 the population of St. Bernard Parish was 67,229. As of June-October of 2006, around a year after the storm, it was estimated to be slightly over 25,000.
